Hand on heart, Silverstrand is about the best place to learn to kitesurf anywhere on the west coast of Ireland — and we don't say that lightly. You get clean, unobstructed wind straight off the Atlantic, a shallow, sandy lagoon set well apart from the main beach, and — once you're done — a coffee and a sauna or ice bath a few steps from our trailer to put the legs back under you. It's the whole package: the right water to learn on, and the right spot to recover afterwards.
Here's what makes it special, and why people travel from all over the west to learn here.
Clean Atlantic wind, nothing in the way
Good wind is the single biggest thing that makes or breaks a lesson, and Silverstrand is blessed with it. The prevailing wind comes in straight off the open Atlantic with no headlands, trees or buildings to break it up, so what you get is smooth and steady rather than gusty and switchy. Smooth wind is far easier and safer to learn on — the kite sits where you put it instead of surging and stalling — which means you spend your lesson actually progressing rather than fighting the conditions. You can read more about how Irish wind behaves in our guide to kitesurfing in Ireland.
A safe, sandy lagoon — away from the crowds
The real secret of the place is the lagoon. On the right tide it gives you flat, shallow, standing-depth water over clean sand — no rocks, no big shore break, and crucially, set apart from the main beach so you're not learning in among swimmers and walkers. That space matters: you've room to fly the kite safely, drop the board and stand up to reset, and build your confidence without an audience or anything to crash into. It's about as forgiving a classroom as the sea gets, and it's exactly why beginners get up and riding so much faster here than on an open, deep, wavy beach. We teach all our lessons here — have a look at the options on our kitesurfing school page.
Our trailer is right on the beach
You'll find us in our trailer at Silverstrand, kitted out with everything we need to get you on the water. You learn on our kites and boards, so there's nothing to buy before you start — just turn up, and we'll match the gear and the session to the day's wind and tide.
Coffee, sauna and ice baths to finish
Here's the bit that makes a day at Silverstrand more than just a lesson. Our trailer sits right next to the Powers sauna, where there's now a coffee trailer as well as a sauna and ice baths on the beach. Kitesurfing is properly physical — you'll work muscles you forgot you had — so when you come off the water you can grab a coffee or a slushy, then warm up in the sauna and brave an ice bath, or just take a dip in the sea to ease the legs. It turns a lesson into a proper morning out, and it's the kind of recovery the pros pay good money for, right here on the beach.
Learn, kit out and save — all in one place
Once you've caught the bug, you don't need to go anywhere else. We're a full kitesurf shop as well as a school, so you can sort your own gear with people who actually ride these waters. Our beginner package deals bundle a kite, bar and board at a far better price than buying piece by piece, and our Gear Up & Save range means the more of your kit you get in one go, the more you save — wetsuits, helmets, harnesses, boots, gloves and more. We've explained how that works in our spend more, save more guide.
Worth the drive from anywhere on the coast
Plenty of our riders travel in for all of this, and we reckon it's worth it from right along the west. We've written up the case for making us your shop and school if you're coming from Mayo, Sligo or Donegal — clean wind, the safe lagoon, the recovery setup and a full shop, all in one trip.
Come and see it for yourself: book a lesson or call into the trailer at Silverstrand (or the shop in Barna village), and we'll get you riding on the best learning beach in the west.
