Want to take kitesurfing lessons in Galway? You're in the right city for it. We teach just down the road at Silverstrand, around ten minutes from Galway city centre, on a safe sandy lagoon that's one of the best beginner kitesurfing spots in the country. Here's everything you need to know to get started.
Where we teach
We run our lessons at Silverstrand, and pick the safest beach for the day's wind and tide. The draw is the lagoon: on the right tide it's flat, shallow, standing-depth water over clean sand, with wind coming straight in off Galway Bay. That means you learn somewhere safe and forgiving rather than in deep water or shore break. We've made the full case for it in our guide to the best place to learn on the west coast.
What a beginner lesson involves
You don't need any gear or experience — we provide everything: kite, board, harness, wetsuit and helmet. A typical beginner journey starts on land learning to fly a trainer kite and drilling the safety systems, then moves to body-dragging in the water, and finally the water start, where the board goes on and the kite pulls you up to riding. Most people need a few sessions to get there; we break down exactly how many in our post on how many lessons it takes to learn kitesurfing.
Lessons that actually stick
We teach to a recognised syllabus, one-to-one or in very small groups, so you're getting real coaching rather than being handed a kite and waved off. Safety is the backbone of every session — kitesurfing is brilliant fun but it has to be learned properly, and good instruction is the difference between progressing fast and picking up scary habits. We plan every lesson around the forecast, so if the wind's not right we'll move you rather than waste your time.
When's the best time to learn?
You can learn around Galway from spring right through autumn, and with the right wetsuit, well into the colder months too. Summer brings warmer water and longer evenings; spring and autumn often bring the most reliable wind. Whatever the season, we'll have you in the right wetsuit for the day — and if you're wondering how warm you need to go, our guide on wetsuit thickness for Ireland has you covered.
What it costs and how to book
Lesson options, durations and prices are all on our kitesurfing school page — that's the place to book. If you're not sure whether to start with a single taster or a full block, message us and we'll point you the right way for your goals and budget. As a rough steer, booking a couple of sessions close together gets you much further than spreading them out.
After you've caught the bug
When you're ready for your own kit, we're a full shop as well as a school, so you can sort everything in one place with people who actually ride here. Have a look at our beginner packages and the Gear Up & Save range, and read our guide to kitesurfing in Ireland for the bigger picture on spots, seasons and gear.
