Ozone Afterburner parawing foiling upwind — available in Ireland from Paddy in the Elements, Galway

Ozone Afterburner Review: First Look at the Performance Parawing

Posted by Paddy on

Straight answer first: the Afterburner is Ozone's new performance parawing for intermediate to advanced riders, it's the most hyped bit of kit in foiling right now, and the first production run sold out at the distributor before most shops got a box open. We're taking orders now for the September delivery — sizes 3.0–6.5m², from €1,569.

Where it sits

Ozone got the parawing world's attention with the Pocket Rocket V2 — the easy, do-everything parawing that most of us started on. The Afterburner is the step up: built for upwind drive and downwind speed, for the rider who's past their first stashes and wants to get out the back faster, ride swell cleaner and come home with more runs banked. Ozone are calling it the ultimate upwind/downwind parawing, and for once the independent reviewers seem to agree with the marketing.

Sizes, wind ranges and prices

  • 3.0m² — 18–40 knots — €1,569
  • 3.6m² — 16–35 knots — €1,679
  • 4.3m² — 14–30 knots — €1,709
  • 5.0m² — 12–25 knots — €1,759
  • 5.7m² — 10–22 knots — €1,789
  • 6.5m² — 8–19 knots — €1,829

For Galway conditions, the 4.3m² and 5.0m² cover the widest slice of our year; the 3.0m² is a proper winter-storm tool.

Don't take our word for it

We haven't had ours on the water yet — stock is that tight — so here are the reviewers we actually rate. First, Ozone's own launch video:

Wing-Tips is one of the most-watched independent reviewers in the UK and isn't affiliated to any brand — his verdict is in the title: "excellent performance, but where is the catch?"

Hydro Gav has tested more parawings than anyone and compares the Afterburner directly against the best of the rest:

And if you want the full hour from the people who designed it, Foilrat sits down with Ozone's Dom Zimmermann and Axel Mazella:

The honest bit: is it for you?

If you're new to parawinging, it isn't — start on the Pocket Rocket V2 and thank us later. The Afterburner is for the rider who already stashes and redeploys without thinking and wants performance: more upwind angle, more speed, cleaner swell riding. Our parawing buyer's guide lines it up against the Pocket Rocket, F-One Frigate, Core Lotus and the rest of what we stock.
