KT Ginxu Dragonfly Surf 2 Carbon 148 downwind SUP foil board at Paddy in the Elements, Galway

KT Ginxu Dragonfly Surf 2 Carbon 148: The Easiest Way Into Downwind Foiling — And Ours Is For Sale

Posted by Paddy on

Short version: the Ginxu Dragonfly Surf 2 is the board that's made downwind foiling learnable, the 148 is the size that makes it learnable for normal-sized humans, and the one in our racks has done four sessions and is priced €400+ under anything in Europe. If you've been watching the downwind thing happen and wondering how to get in without three months of falling — read on.

What it is

KT's Ginxu Dragonfly is Keith Teboul's downwind and SUP foil design, and the Surf 2 Carbon is the current generation: Dual Fusion Core carbon construction and the patented Ginxu step bottom — a recessed channel under the tail that breaks surface tension so the board releases onto the foil earlier and at lower speed than a flat-bottomed board. In practice that means fewer paddle strokes to get flying, which is the whole game in downwind.

Why the 148 specifically

This is the 8'10" x 20.5", 148 litres — the volume that changes who can do this sport. The smaller Ginxus are brilliant if you're 70kg and already flying; the 148 is the one for heavier riders, for anyone learning to paddle up on flat water, and for SUP foiling proper waves. It's stable enough to stand on and stroke into a bump without the balance battle, and the quad boxes plus dual foil tracks mean it takes whatever foil you're running. One board that covers the entire learn-to-downwind journey.

The honest bit

Ours has been on the water four times. Bought new this season, stored indoors, light cosmetic marks from careful use and nothing more — every mark is shown in the photos on the listing, no repairs, no dings. New, these are €2,170 at the cheapest EU shops and €2,460 RRP. Ours is €1,749 as part of the Summer Clearance — a carbon downwind board for less than most aluminium foil setups.

Fair warning on timing

The clearance gear is moving — the Core big air package sold last week, the Seek 138 wing board is sale agreed with a buyer travelling from Dublin for it, and the clearance ends 30 September, full stop. There's exactly one of this board in the country at this price.
