Wing foiling in Ireland is having its moment — and the west coast is the best place in the country to do it. Flat, sheltered bays for learning, Atlantic swell for the brave, and wind. So much wind. Here's the honest guide we give everyone who walks into the shop asking how to start: where to ride, when to go, and what gear actually works here. When you're ready to go deeper, our full Foiling Ireland page breaks down every board, wing and foil we rate, level by level.
Why Ireland is quietly brilliant for wing foiling
The thing that makes Ireland hard for other sports makes it perfect for winging: wind reliability. While wingfoilers on the Med wait weeks for 15 knots, we get rideable days year-round — and because a foil flies in light wind and a wing handles strong wind, the wingfoil "season" here is effectively twelve months long with the right wetsuit. Galway Bay is our home patch: Rusheen Bay is the flat, sheltered, waist-deep classroom where we teach, and once you're up and riding, Silverstrand and the wider bay open up. The rest of the west — from Clare's lagoons up to Mayo's Keel and Elly Bay — is an embarrassment of riches covered in our Where to Ride guide.
When to go
Learning is easiest May to September: warmer water, longer evenings, and steadier 12–20 knot days. Autumn and winter are when the sport gets addictive — more wind, empty spots, and a 5/4 wetsuit with boots, gloves and a hood keeps it comfortable (our Gear Up & Save bundles exist for exactly this). If you're starting from zero, book a 1:1 wing foil lesson on Rusheen — you'll learn on our gear and skip the expensive trial-and-error phase entirely.
What you need — the short version
Three things: a board with your weight in kilos plus 30–40 litres of volume, a 4–5m wing for Irish conditions, and a foil with enough area to lift you early and forgive mistakes. We wrote a full breakdown in Your First Wing Foil Setup, and every recommended setup lives on the Foiling Ireland page — from the F-One Rocket Wing and Origin V2 wing for starters up to Code Foils carbon and Appletree boards when you're pushing on. Complete beginner packages start around €2,175 — and everything is on our demo fleet, so you can try before you buy and we'll knock the demo cost off your purchase.
The mistakes that slow people down
Buying a board that's too small (volume is progression speed — you can't learn to fly while you're swimming). Buying blind from a factory-direct website and discovering the sizing was wrong for your weight and your local spot. And skipping lessons — an hour of coaching saves about ten hours of flailing, and you get to find out what gear suits you before spending a euro on it. If you're weighing up where to buy, our advice is simple: buy from someone who'll still be answering your WhatsApps in a year. That's the whole pitch.
Not sure where you fit? WhatsApp us on 087 144 8888 with your weight, your nearest spot and your budget, and we'll give you a straight answer — or call into the shop in Barna and talk to people who were on the water this morning.
