The short answer: your first wing foil setup is three things — a board with your weight in kilos plus 30–40 litres of volume, a wing around 4–5m² for Irish wind, and a foil with enough area to lift you early and forgive your mistakes. Get those three matched to each other and to you, and you'll progress in weeks. Get them mismatched — too small a board is the classic — and you'll spend a season falling in. Here's how we set people up at the shop, and what it honestly costs.
The board: litres are your friend
Every beginner wants the small board they'll ride eventually. Resist. Your first board should float you comfortably while you're kneeling, standing and flapping about — that's your weight in kg plus 30–40 litres. An 85kg rider learns fastest on something around 115–125L. Volume is progression speed: the stability lets you spend your session working the wing instead of swimming. You'll outgrow it in a season, which is exactly why we run demo gear and take trade-ins seriously — buy the learning board, learn fast, then size down.
The wing: 4–5m covers most Irish days
Ireland's learning wind is 15–25 knots, and for most adult riders a 4m or 5m wing covers the bulk of it. The foil: big front wing, no ego
Same principle underwater: area is lift, and lift is forgiveness. A larger front wing gets you flying at lower speeds, which means gentler crashes and more time on foil per session. As Ireland's only Code Foils dealer we build most beginner setups on Code's modular system — start on a bigger wing, and when your technique catches up you swap the front wing rather than the whole foil. Your mast, fuselage and board all carry over. That modularity is the cheapest upgrade path in the sport.
