Ozone Flux V2 Ultra-X wing in Ireland — heavy rider freeride wing

Ozone Flux V2 Ultra-X review — the heavy rider's wing

Posted by Paddy on

Quick answer: the Ozone Flux V2 Ultra-X is the fastest, most efficient freeride wing we've ever stocked — and in the 6m, it's the best heavy-rider wing money can buy. We know because Paddy just bought one with his own money, and it's now his personal go-to.

Some context: Paddy's a big-dawg wingfoiler, over 110kg, and the west of Ireland doesn't hand out perfect wind. For years that's meant big wings that get you going but feel like wardrobes in your hands. The Flux V2 Ultra-X in a 6m is the first wing that solves both ends of that problem at once. (The full story of the purchase — and what the reviewers and forums say — is in why we bought the Flux V2 Ultra-X 6m.)

Why the Ultra-X is different

The magic is the Aluula airframe — roughly 20% lighter on average than the standard Flux V2's Dacron frame, and significantly stiffer with it. That combination matters more the bigger the wing gets. A 6m in traditional Dacron starts to feel soft and heavy; in Aluula it stays crisp, taut and light in the hands. The thinner leading edge and strut cut drag, so you get real acceleration, serious top speed and elite upwind angles — from a wing big enough to get a heavy rider foiling in modest Galway Bay breeze.

What that means on the water

For a heavier rider, the 6m Ultra-X is the do-everything answer: the low-end grunt of a big wing, without the big-wing penalty once you're up and riding. It's efficient enough to hold its own at the top end, balanced enough for fast, fluid tacks and gybes, and it's big air and freestyle ready with confident wave riding ability when you flag it out — helped by the stiffer leading edge handle for drift control. The EVA-covered carbon handles, including the extended front handle for one-handed control, are the same excellent setup as the standard Flux V2.

Flux V2 or Flux V2 Ultra-X?

Honest answer: the standard Flux V2 (from €1,119) is a brilliant performance freeride wing and plenty for most riders. The Ultra-X earns its premium in two cases: you're chasing every last degree upwind and every knot of speed — or you're a heavier rider sizing up, where the Aluula weight saving is the difference between a 6m that flies and a 6m that lumps. That second case is exactly why Paddy's is a 6m.

Sizes, price and stock

The Flux V2 Ultra-X runs from 3m to 6.5m, from €1,819. The 6m is €2,369 and we have it in stock in Barna right now — one on the shelf, one on Paddy's van. As the only Ozone dealer on the west coast, we can also get any size on order.

Not sure whether you're a Flux or a Flow rider, or what size suits your weight and local spot? WhatsApp us — tell us your weight and where you ride and we'll tell you straight. Or call into the shop in Barna village and, wind permitting, we'll show you what it does.
