Ozone Vortex V2 Ultra-X big air kite

Gear review: the Ozone Vortex V2 Ultra-X, tested in Connemara

Posted by Paddy on

Verdict up front: the Ozone Vortex V2 Ultra-X is a proper big-air and kite-loop weapon — yet it's far more usable than a kite this capable has any right to be. We took it out in Connemara to find where its limits are, and honestly, most of us will run out of nerve before this kite runs out of talent.

Where we tested it

There's nowhere quite like Connemara to put a big-air kite through its paces — raw Atlantic wind, big open space and proper West-of-Ireland conditions. That's exactly what this kite is built for, and it's where we wanted to feel it for real rather than just read the spec sheet.

What it is

The Vortex V2 is Ozone's unrestricted big air and kite-loop machine — the kite for riders chasing maximum boost and committing to loops. The "Ultra-X" refers to Ozone's premium lightweight, high-strength construction: it makes the kite lighter in the air, crisper to steer and tougher, so it holds its shape and response when you're loading it up hard.

How it rides

Two things stand out. First, the boost: it climbs fast and floats, giving you that long, hangtime-rich pop that makes big air so addictive. Second — and this is the clever part — it stays predictable. Plenty of dedicated loop kites get sketchy when you're not fully committed; the Vortex V2 keeps a clear, progressive feel through the loop, so it's manageable for a confident intermediate, not just the pros. The steering is direct, the catch through a loop is smooth, and the upwind is better than you'd expect from a kite this aggressive.

Who it's for

If your sessions are about sending it — boosting as high as you dare and learning or stomping kite loops — this is your kite. It rewards intermediates who want something to grow into, and gives advanced riders a top-tier, competition-level tool. If you mostly cruise, freeride or ride waves, one of Ozone's more all-round kites will suit you better — and we'll happily point you the right way.

Sizes, price and trying one

The Ozone Vortex V2 Ultra-X starts at €2,469, with a full size run so we can match it to your weight and your local wind. As an official Ozone dealer we can also get you on one — there's no substitute for feeling the boost yourself. Have a browse of the rest of the Ozone range, and if you want a hand choosing, that's exactly what we're here for.
