Once you're past your very first sessions and starting to feel comfortable on a kite, the board underneath you matters more than people expect. The Lieuwe Awesome is the board we point students and newer riders towards at that stage — it's built to keep the "getting better fast" feeling going rather than fighting you for it.
The Awesome has a flexible wood core and slightly less rocker than a typical beginner board, and that combination is what makes it click. Less rocker means less drag going upwind, so you build speed with less effort and stop losing ground every time you turn. The 3D shape is engineered to track straight almost on its own, which takes one more thing off your plate while you're still building muscle memory for everything else — edge control, power management, timing your turns.
We stock it in five sizes — 130, 134, 138, 145 and 150cm — at €659 across the board, so sizing is about matching the board to your weight and the conditions you're riding rather than paying more for a bigger size. As a rough guide, lighter riders and stronger wind days suit the smaller end, heavier riders or lighter wind days suit the bigger sizes — message us your weight and local spot and we'll point you to the right one.
It's a genuinely good fit for the conditions around Galway — Silverstrand in particular, where you're often riding a mix of wind strengths across a session and want a board that doesn't feel like hard work the moment the wind drops a knot or two.
Lieuwe are a brand we're proud to be the only Irish dealer for — every board is built with real attention to detail, and the Awesome is the one we'd suggest first if you're shopping their range for the first time. If you want the full picture of where it sits against their other boards — the Shotgun, Brute or Falcon — we've a guide for that linked below.
Not sure the Awesome is the right call for where you're at? Message us on WhatsApp and we'll talk it through honestly, even if that means pointing you at something else. And if you're ever in Barna, pop into the shop — we're always happy to chat boards, no pressure to buy.
