Short answer: yes — if you're riding Foil Drive, a trench board is worth it, and it's the first thing to get right before you spend money on anything fancier. What a trench board actually does
A Foil Drive unit on a flat-bottomed board sits proud in the water flow — a pod and cable run hanging out in the stream, creating drag with every metre you ride. A trench board recesses the whole system into the hull. Appletree's numbers on their trench design are blunt: less drag, better water flow, and less battery burned to cover the same water. Just as important is where the weight goes — the recessed layout puts the battery close to your feet, which cuts swing weight and makes the board feel like a board again in tight turns, not a board with luggage.
Your first line of defence against drag
That's the way to think about it: the trench is the first and cheapest drag win in motor-assisted foiling. Before you chase exotic masts or smaller front wings, getting the unit out of the flow does more for your range and your ride feel than anything else — and it's built into the board you were buying anyway. Appletree developed their trench in direct collaboration with the Foil Drive team, and it set the benchmark the rest of the market has been chasing since. Then, down the line: the integrated mast
Once you've got your trench, the next step in the drag war is integration at the mast — running the cabling and connection through the mast itself rather than around it. That's the right order — trench first, integrated mast later. Doing it the other way round is paying for the last 10% before you've collected the first 50%.

1) A trench board sized to your weight — for most people starting out that's the BIG Zapple; lighter or more experienced riders go Zapple or Zapple S. 2) The Foil Drive unit itself — talk to us about which generation suits. 3) A season of riding. 4) Then the integrated mast if you want it.
